What a taxation career is made of
A taxation career is the repeated work of closing a period so that the portal, the books, and your explanation agree. In Indian practice that work usually sits in GST, in income tax and TDS, or on the company calendar when the client is a company. You become useful when a reviewer can open your folder and re-perform the file: sources named, draft labelled, and open points listed with an owner.
You will spend more time on registers and portal screens than on speeches about tax policy. The GST portal, the income-tax e-filing portal, and the MCA portal are the systems of record for their own filings. Learn which screen proves the figure, and write down the date you looked. The notes on a and an show what those two desks do between filing dates.
Qualifications the institutes grant
Professional qualifications are granted by the bodies set up for them. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India grants the CA qualification. The Institute of Company Secretaries of India grants the CS qualification. The Institute of Cost Accountants of India grants the CMA qualification. A law degree is awarded by a university, and enrolment as an advocate follows the Bar Council framework. Kanoons Academy does not grant any of those credentials, and this catalogue does not claim recognition by ICAI, ICSI, or any other institute.
is a study programme. It walks through a computation and a return file a reviewer can follow. Completing it shows that you studied that method. It does not enrol you with an institute, it does not create a right to represent a taxpayer, and it is not accompanied by a placement claim. This catalogue does not publish salary figures.
Training contracts and confidentiality
If you are in articleship or company-secretary training, the institute’s training rules and your principal’s engagement terms decide what you may copy from a live file. A portfolio can describe a method: how you tied a sales register to a draft, or how you indexed a notice. Remove the client name, PAN, GSTIN, and amounts before you show it. Inventing hours or client names is a worse interview outcome than a thin portfolio.
What a study programme can add
Use a study programme to practise on a blank file before anyone trusts you with a live GSTIN or PAN. Build a cover note every time: period, sources, what matched, what did not, and what you still need from the client. That habit transfers into a firm. A completion record is evidence of study you can describe. It is not a statutory licence to sign a return or appear before an authority.
Skills that show up in the first year
The skills that show up early are ordinary and checkable. You reconcile a register to a portal figure and you can point to the line that caused the difference. You read the effective date on a notification before you apply an old rate or an old form. You write questions a client can answer without a meeting: document name, period, and the decision you need. You keep versions so yesterday’s draft is still in the folder when the reviewer asks what changed.
You also learn when to stop. A portal rejection, a section you have not read, or a number with no source is a reason to ask a senior, not a reason to guess. Company secretarial work is a third lane, set out in the . Many small offices mix the lanes. The skill is knowing which file you are in before you start typing.
A week in the life of a junior associate
An ordinary week has the same shape in a GST week and in a return-filing window. Monday you collect documents and label them by period and by GSTIN or PAN. Tuesday you tie the books to the draft and write the difference in one note. Wednesday you turn that difference into a short query list. Thursday you sit with the reviewer and change the draft only where the evidence changed. Friday you save the acknowledgement or the review note, and you diary the next due date from the portal itself.
Outside the peak window the week shifts to notices, reconciliations you could not close, and one section you got wrong last time. Keep a personal error log: the reviewer’s change, the reason, and the source you should have opened. That log is more useful in a later interview than a list of software brands. It also stops you repeating the same tie-out mistake on the next client.
Choosing GST, income tax, or corporate compliance
Choose GST if you like invoice-level matching and a monthly rhythm. Choose income tax if you like an annual computation, heads of income, and letters from the department. Choose corporate compliance if you like a board calendar, minutes, and MCA forms. Read the before you commit to the direct-tax lane, so you can see the map of returns, TDS, and assessments. Choose the file you want to master. This site does not publish salary surveys to push you toward a lane.
Job posts often blur the words accountant, tax practitioner, and tax consultant. Those are not interchangeable seats, and a profile that uses all three on day one is hard to trust. Sort the words in the comparison of before you print them under your name.
How to present the work in an interview
Prepare one redacted walk-through of about three minutes. State the period, the return or form, the register you started from, the mismatch you found, and what you did next. If you have not had a live client, walk through a study file and say that it was a study file. A reviewer can hear the difference between a real acknowledgement and a practice exercise, so do not blur them.
Bring a checklist you actually use: documents in, tie-out done, exceptions listed, reviewer sign-off, proof of filing stored. Offer to explain one open point you would still escalate. That is the interview. Do not claim that an institute has approved Kanoons Academy, and do not invent a placement story. Neither claim is available for you to make.
Frequently asked questions
Does Kanoons Academy place people into tax jobs?
No. The Academy publishes study programmes. It does not run a placement service, and this catalogue does not state placement rates or salary figures.
Can a course make me a chartered accountant?
No. The CA qualification is granted by ICAI. A CS qualification is granted by ICSI, and a CMA qualification by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India. Academy courses are study programmes, not those qualifications.
Which official system should I learn first?
Learn the system that matches the lane you chose. GST work lives on the GST portal. Income-tax and many TDS checks start on the income-tax e-filing portal. Company filings live on the MCA portal. Confirm the live screen each time, because menus move.
Do I need articleship before I study the file?
You can study a method on a blank file at any time. Live client work, training contracts, and the right to sign or represent are governed by the relevant institute and by statute. A study file is not a substitute for that training.
Should I memorise tax rates for interviews?
Know how to look a rate or section up for the period in question on the official portal or the Act. Rates and thresholds change by notification. A reviewer trusts a lookup you can repeat more than a number you memorised last year.
Can I start a freelance filing desk after one course?
Only if the law allows you to prepare or represent for that client and you can control quality. Treat it as a practice with responsibility for the acknowledgement you generate. A course completion record is not that permission.
