The passage is the rule for that item
Legal reasoning in CLAT, as the Consortium of National Law Universities has described it in its brochures, is a reading task. You are given a passage. The passage states a principle, a set of conditions, or a small legal situation. The questions ask you to apply that material. The and the note tell you to adopt the section only if your year's brochure still names it. Confirm on the official authority for the year you are applying. This page trains the skill. It does not publish an official item or a count of items.
The discipline is uncomfortable for students who have started to memorise cases. Memory wants to show off. The item wants obedience to the paragraph. If the paragraph says a person is liable only when three conditions hold, a famous case that used two conditions is irrelevant. You are not being asked who you have read. You are being asked whether you can follow instructions that happen to be about law.
A way to read one passage
Read the passage once for the rule and once for the limits. Write the rule in a short line: who must do what, and the exception. Do not write a commentary. Then read the question's facts and tick which parts of your line are present. An option that adds a moral judgment you like, but that the line does not contain, is wrong for this item even if it is good ethics. Choose after the tick list exists. Candidates who read options first end up hunting the passage for words that match a tempting option. That is backwards.
Exceptions and stipulated worlds
Many misses live in a single word: only, unless, except, provided. Circle those words. A second family of misses is the stipulated world. The passage may say "for this question, assume the following rule," and the rule may be narrower than the Act you remember. Apply the assumption. You can be curious later about the real text on India Code. Curiosity during the item is how you "correct" a question that was not asking for the correction. Degree-level judgment reading, which is a different and slower art, is described in . It will make you a better lawyer-in-training. It is not a licence to import a holding the passage did not state.
Shorter State items are a different drill
The note deals with shorter principle-and-fact items when a Telangana booklet has that heading. The virtue of not adding facts is shared. The length and the brochure are not. If you practise both, close one notebook before you open the other. A short-item reflex will make you skim a CLAT passage. A passage reflex will make you over-read a short State item. Name the exam at the top of the page every time.
What outside knowledge is for
Outside knowledge belongs in study time. It helps you understand a word so the passage is not fog. It does not vote inside the item. Learn enough about contracts, rights, and basic liability that a passage's vocabulary is not new. Do not learn section numbers in order to defeat a passage. Invented numbers are a special way to be wrong. Criminal-law names are a trap of their own: the codes now in force are the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. Older books say IPC, CrPC, and the Evidence Act. Do not build a conversion table of section numbers from memory. If a passage uses an old name, follow the passage's definition, not a number you hope matches.
Current events do not answer a legal-reasoning item unless the passage incorporates them. File news elsewhere. A headline about a judgment is not the judgment and not the passage.
A hypothetical about a true fact that was not in the passage
Hypothetical. A passage defines nuisance narrowly and asks whether a factory's noise qualifies. Omar knows a real case, or thinks he does, in which noise of that kind was restrained. The passage's definition is missing an element the facts do not satisfy. He picks the option that matches his memory. The item is wrong. His memory might even be a fair account of some judgment. It was not the text he was told to apply.
The log line is "replaced the passage with an outside holding." The repair is to write the passage's elements before any option, for the next ten items. He does not need a new casebook. He needs a delay between recognition and choice. If the brochure later describes the section differently, he reads that description again. The skill is stable. The scope is not his to freeze.
A checklist for a passage session
Keep the session short enough to review. 1. Confirm the brochure still describes a legal-reasoning section, and copy one line of that description. 2. Take a small set of passages, not a heroically long one. 3. Write the rule and its exceptions before you read options. 4. Tick facts against the rule. 5. Log the miss type: ignored a limiter, added a fact, or imported outside law. 6. Retry that type next, before a new topic. 7. Confirm on the official authority for the year you are applying that you have not turned a practice passage into an official CLAT item in your notes.
Ten passages with a log teach more than forty you only score. Write "practice" on the set. This academy will not key it for you.
Nearest course, stated honestly
Kanoons Academy does not currently list a separate LAWCET, CLAT, or AP LAWCET batch in the catalogue; these notes are study material, and counselling is via . The nearest catalogue course is . That course teaches how to read an Act, a rule, and a judgment note. It is not a CLAT legal-reasoning batch, and the button on this page uses the course's own name. The overlap is real: both ask you to obey a text.
Obeying passages will not guarantee an NLU. It will stop a particular, common way of being wrong. For a course that exists, use the contact page. For the section's official description, use the Consortium brochure.
Frequently asked questions
Should I quote case names in the answer?
These items are not essays. A case name does not help if the passage already gave you the rule. Use the passage. Learn to read judgments separately, for degree work, not as a CLAT trick.
What if I know the real law differs from the passage?
For the item, apply the passage. The passage may simplify or even stipulate a rule for the question. Fighting it with outside law is a common miss.
Is this the same as TS LAWCET legal aptitude?
Both can involve a principle and facts. CLAT passages are often longer. Keep the Telangana drill in its own note and do not swap the logs.
Do I need the bare Act open?
In study time, yes, so words are familiar. In a passage drill, the passage is the text. Opening a full Act mid-item usually means you did not trust the passage.
Will legal reasoning alone clear CLAT?
Only if the brochure has no other section. It does not promise a score even then. Revise the whole map.
Does the academy grade passages?
No. There is no CLAT test product. You review your own log.
