What an income-tax file contains
An income-tax file is built for a PAN and an assessment year. Inside it you expect identity documents, the books or capital account, statements of tax already paid, and a computation that walks from each head of income to tax payable or refundable. The is the map of that system. Your folder is one taxpayer’s year, not the whole Act.
The income-tax e-filing portal is where returns, many communications, and pre-filled information are dealt with. Download AIS and Form 26AS yourself and store the PDFs with the date in the filename. Pre-filled numbers are a starting point. Every figure you adopt still needs a source you can point to: a Form 16, a bank certificate, a broker statement, or a ledger. is the method note for the upload step after the computation exists.
Skills that matter on a computation
The skill is not reciting slab jokes. It is classifying a receipt under the right head, keeping exempt and taxable items apart, and showing the section you relied on in the margin of the computation. It is matching TDS and advance tax to the challans and to 26AS before you promise a refund. It is knowing which ITR form the portal instructions name for that status and those incomes, and checking the instruction for the year you are filing.
Reviewers also watch your queries. “Please send documents” produces a dump. “Please send the March bank statement, pages 4 to 6, for the interest credited on the 28th” produces an answer. is the Academy study programme for building this computation and the return file around it. It is study. It is not the CA qualification, which ICAI grants, and it is not a licence to act as an authorised representative.
Notices and the first draft
A notice is a letter with a section, a DIN or reference, and a response window. Your first job is to read it onto one page: what year, what issue, what documents it asks for, and the date by which a reply is due. Draft a reply only from the computation and the evidence already in the file. If the issue is a position you have not studied, stop and take it to the person who will sign. A fluent paragraph with the wrong year on it is a worse outcome than a short holding note.
Working papers a reviewer can re-perform
Number the computation. Cross-reference each adjustment to a page in the PDF bundle. Keep a list of figures you typed from a phone photo so they can be checked against the original. When you change a head after review, save the new version and write one line on what moved. The reviewer should not have to ask which file is final on the evening before the portal deadline published for that form.
A week in return season and a week outside it
In the filing window published on incometax.gov.in, Monday is collection: Form 16, AIS, 26AS, books, and last year’s computation. Tuesday is the tie-out of tax credits and a list of AIS lines you do not recognise. Wednesday is the draft computation, head by head, with open points in a second column. Thursday is review. Friday is filing only after the signer has seen the draft and the tax payable, then saving the acknowledgement in the same folder. If the client’s papers arrive on Thursday, you say so in the note. You do not invent a review that did not happen.
Outside that window the week is assessments, rectifications, and TDS defaults that surface when a deductor’s return does not match the deductee’s claim. You might spend a morning on one notice and an afternoon updating a tracker of years still open. Use the quieter week to reread one section you applied from memory and to check the text on the official source. The career is those quieter weeks as much as the rush.
TDS as the daily companion of income tax
Income-tax work and TDS work share a PAN and then diverge. A deductee’s file asks whether credit appears in 26AS. A deductor’s file asks whether tax was withheld, deposited, and reported in the TDS return for that quarter. will keep the two roles from blurring. TRACES is the system deductors use for many TDS processes. Confirm the live manual there rather than relying on a screenshot from a previous quarter.
A junior on an income-tax desk should be able to explain a 26AS line: deductor TAN, section, amount credited, tax deposited. A junior on a deductee file should notice when AIS shows a receipt the client has not mentioned. Write the query the same day. Credit you claim without a matching deposit becomes the client’s problem later, and it becomes your review note if you missed it.
How this lane differs from a GST seat
GST closes a tax period on a GSTIN, often every month. Income tax closes a year on a PAN, then lives on through assessments. The documents differ, the portals differ, and the rhythm differs. People who enjoy invoice matching often prefer the . People who enjoy a long computation and a letter that cites a section often stay on income tax. You can learn both. Keep the folders apart so a GSTR-3B working never sits unmarked inside an ITR bundle.
Smaller offices will still ask you to help with both in the same week. Say which file you are opening before you start, and book the review with the person responsible for that statute. The overview of a is the place to see the lanes side by side if you have not chosen.
Study programmes and the qualification you still need
Build one full study computation: salary or business income, a tax-credit tie-out, a list of AIS mismatches, and a note of which ITR form you would check on the portal for that fact pattern. Then explain it aloud in five minutes. That is the skill employers can test. Income Tax for Practitioners is organised around that file. Finishing it does not make you a chartered accountant, a company secretary, a cost accountant, or a law graduate.
If your aim is to sign, to article, or to represent, follow the enrolment path of the institute or the degree path of a university, and read the authorised-representative provisions in the Income-tax Act on the official text. Use the study programme to be ready for the work inside that path. Do not tell an interviewer that the Academy is recognised by ICAI or ICSI. It does not make that claim.
Frequently asked questions
Which ITR form should I memorise?
Do not memorise a form number as universal. The portal instructions for the assessment year state which form fits which status and which incomes. Your skill is checking that instruction and recording what you found.
Is AIS enough to file?
AIS is a prompt. File from evidence: books, Form 16, bank and broker statements, and a computation. Reconcile AIS and 26AS to that evidence and list what you cannot explain.
Can I reply to a scrutiny notice after this course?
You can learn how to read a notice onto one page. A reply that takes a position should be settled by the person allowed to represent that taxpayer. A study programme does not create that authority.
How is this different from accounting work?
Accounting produces the books. Income-tax work classifies those books under the Act and computes tax. The comparison of accountant, tax practitioner, and tax consultant sets the seats out. Many people do both, in that order.
Does the Academy quote a salary for income-tax roles?
No. Ask employers about file volume, who signs the return, and how review works in July and in January. Those facts tell you more than a forum average.
Where do I confirm a due date?
On the income-tax portal and in the official circular or notification for that year. Diary the date you read, and read it again before you promise a client a day.
