What a slab is doing in the computation
A slab schedule splits taxable income into bands. Income that falls in a lower band is charged at that band's rate; only the slice above a threshold enters the next band. Quoting a single "tax rate" for a person whose income crosses several bands misstates the bill. The worksheet shows each band, the income in it, and the tax on that slice.
The base is taxable income under the regime, not cost-to-company and not the credit that appears in a bank account. Exemptions that the regime allows come out inside the relevant head. Deductions the regime allows come out in the deduction schedule. What remains is the figure the slabs see. If you change the regime, you change both the bands and the deductions, so you recompute from the heads. The comparison sits in .
Where the official schedule lives
The Finance Act for the year amends the rate schedule. The Income Tax Department republishes the rates that apply to an assessment year on https://www.incometax.gov.in/, and the e-filing utility computes from that year's logic. Your job is to match three labels before you trust a number: assessment year, regime, and the status of the person (individual, senior categories the Act still distinguishes, firm, company). A schedule for a domestic company is not an individual slab.
When a news summary and the utility disagree, the utility and the Act win for filing, and you keep the screenshot of the rate page in the file. This article does not print a slab table, a surcharge rate, a cess rate, or a rebate amount. Those figures move. Copy them from the assessment year you are filing, into the working paper, with the page date.
How to read one band
For each band, record the lower edge, the upper edge, the rate, and the slice of this person's taxable income that sits inside it. Add the tax on the slices. Then read the next lines in the same notification: any rebate that reduces tax when total income is within a limit, any surcharge when income exceeds a limit, and the cess applied on tax plus surcharge. Marginal relief, where the Act provides it, stops a small crossing of a surcharge threshold from raising tax by more than the extra income. Use the utility's computation sheet for that relief rather than a rounded guess.
Special-rate income sits beside the slabs
Some income is charged at a special rate on its own schedule, commonly certain capital gains, and is not pushed through the ordinary bands. The form has a separate schedule for it. Dropping that income into the slab base double-counts or under-taxes it. Identify special-rate lines on the utility's tax summary and tie each one to a schedule in your paper.
Order of the arithmetic
A reliable order is: income under each head, exemptions inside the head, deductions the regime allows, taxable income, slab tax, special-rate tax, rebate if the provision applies, surcharge if the provision applies, cess, then credits for tax deducted, tax collected, and advance tax. The refund or the payable is the last line, not the first. Practitioners who start from "expected refund" edit the credits until the story fits.
The e-filing utility prints this order on the computation sheet once the schedules are filled. Export or save that sheet into the file and tick each line against your paper. A difference of a rupee from rounding is a note. A difference in the taxable-income line means a head or a deduction is wrong. assumes this sheet has already been read.
Two colleagues, one gross salary
Two employees in the same city earn the same annual salary from the same employer. One pays rent and invests through the channels the old regime still recognises. The other claims nothing beyond what the new regime allows. Their gross salary matches. Their taxable income does not, and they may be on different slab schedules because they are on different regimes. Comparing take-home pay, or comparing the employer's monthly deduction, does not tell you who computed the year correctly.
Build two columns only if both regimes are legally open for this person. In each column, list only the deductions that column's regime allows this year, then apply that column's slabs from the official schedule. Keep the employer's tax-deduction working, explained in , as a credit check, not as the slab computation itself. The is the place to confirm the heads before you touch the bands.
Checklist for reading a slab notification
Use this each assessment year. 1. Write the assessment year on the notification copy. 2. Mark whether the page is the old regime schedule or the new regime schedule. 3. Confirm the person type the schedule covers. 4. Compute taxable income before any band is applied. 5. Apply bands to slices, not one rate to the whole income. 6. Read rebate, surcharge, marginal relief, and cess from the same year's page. 7. Separate special-rate income. 8. Compare the total to the utility computation sheet and file the sheet.
If a band edge or a rebate line is missing from your copy, stop and download the page again from the Income Tax Department. A partial table from a messenger forward is how wrong refunds are promised.
What to hand to the person who files
Hand across a one-page bridge: taxable income, regime, slab tax, special-rate tax, rebate, surcharge, cess, credits, and payable or refund, each with a source document. The filer should be able to open the utility and find the same numbers without calling you. That bridge is the work product of a slab exercise.
Students who want this as a repeated drill, with review of someone else's computation, take it up in . The course does not replace the Finance Act page for the year you are about to file.
Frequently asked questions
Do slabs apply to my gross salary?
They apply to taxable income after the exemptions and deductions the regime you are using still allows. Gross salary is an earlier line.
Why does this article not show the slab table?
The table changes with the Finance Act and differs by regime and assessment year. Read it on https://www.incometax.gov.in/ for the year you are filing.
Is the new regime's slab the only one that exists?
Both regimes have schedules when the law still offers both. Identify which schedule you are in before you read a rate.
Where do surcharge and cess appear?
After slab tax, in the same year's rate provisions. Cess is charged on tax including surcharge where the Finance Act says so. Use the utility sheet rather than a remembered percentage.
Can capital gains use the ordinary slabs?
Often they are taxed on a special-rate schedule. Check the asset and the year of transfer on the form instructions before you merge them into slab income.
My employer already deducted tax. Do I still compute slabs?
Yes. Employer deduction is a credit and an estimate. The return recomputes the year. Differences are reconciled, not ignored.
