Who ITR-1 is built for
ITR-1, also called Sahaj on the form, is aimed at a resident individual whose year is easy to describe: salary or pension, at most one house property, and other-source income such as bank interest or family pension. The person is not claiming a business, a profession, or a capital gain. If that sentence is already wrong, stop and use rather than forcing this one.
Residence matters. A non-resident, and in many years a resident but not ordinarily resident, is outside ITR-1 even if the only income is salary from India. Confirm the residence categories the current instruction allows. The day-count test itself is in the Act for the previous year; this guide does not print the day thresholds, because amendments have changed the exceptions around them.
Bars you check before you type
The instruction that ships with the utility lists who must not use ITR-1. The list has included, in recent years, more than one house property, capital gains, foreign assets or foreign income, being a director in a company, holding unlisted equity, agricultural income above a stated limit, and total income above a stated ceiling. Those limits are figures. They move. Read them on the instruction for this assessment year at https://www.incometax.gov.in/. Do not inherit last year's ceiling from a saved PDF.
Clubbing of another person's income, brought-forward losses, and assets or signing authority outside India are the items staff miss because they sit outside the payslip. Ask the questions aloud and write the answers on the cover sheet. A single "yes" moves the file, usually to , which is built for individuals who still have no business but have outgrown the short form.
One house property means one
A self-occupied house and a let-out house are two properties. A house you own and a house you only rent as a tenant are not two properties of yours; the rented one is a salary-exemption question, not a second house-property schedule. Count houses the person owns or is deemed to own. If the count is two, ITR-1 is the wrong form for a typical recent year. Confirm the count rule in this year's instruction in case the Finance Act has widened it.
Other sources is not a junk drawer
Interest and family pension are the usual other-source lines inside ITR-1. A winning from a lottery, a gift the Act taxes, or a dividend the form has decided to push elsewhere may be outside the short form in a given year. Match the nature of the receipt to the instruction's allowed list. If the receipt is absent from that list, change forms before you look for a blank box to type it into.
Schedules you will actually fill
Expect a personal-information block, a filing-status and regime question, a salary schedule fed by the employer certificate, a house-property block limited to one property, an other-sources block, a deduction schedule that shows only what the chosen regime allows, a tax-paid and tax-credit block, and a computation. There is no profit-and-loss schedule and no capital-gains schedule. Their absence is a feature. It tells you the form cannot hold those facts.
Salary figures should trace to : gross salary, exemptions the regime still allows, and tax deducted. Interest should trace to a bank or depositor certificate, then to the annual information statement. Deductions should trace to receipts, and only if still permits them. The computation sheet is the page you read before submission, using the sequence in .
A renter with one savings account
A resident employee lives in a rented flat, owns no house, earned interest on one savings account, and sold no investments. The employer issued a certificate. The information statement shows the salary and the interest. ITR-1 is the right hypothesis. Open the utility, answer the eligibility questions, and proceed only if ITR-1 is offered. Enter salary from the certificate, interest from the bank certificate, and the regime after both computations exist. Tax deducted is a credit, matched to the tax-credit statement, not a reduction of the salary line.
If during the year they bought a second house, or their parent gifted listed shares which they sold, the hypothesis dies. Save nothing into a half-filled ITR-1. Switch forms, carry the salary and interest across, and add the new schedule. The acknowledgement must show the form you actually needed.
Checklist for an ITR-1 file
Complete this before prefill is imported. 1. Confirm the person is a resident individual in the category this year's instruction allows. 2. List income and stop if anything other than salary, one house, or permitted other sources appears. 3. Read the ceiling and the agricultural-income limit on the current instruction and mark pass or fail. 4. Mark foreign assets, directorship, and unlisted shares as no, with the question date. 5. Choose the regime from a two-column paper. 6. Tie salary, interest, and tax deducted to certificates and portal statements. 7. Read the computation. 8. Submit and verify.
Keep the instruction PDF for this assessment year in the folder. Next year's preparer should not have to guess which bars you applied. asks students to defend an ITR-1 choice in a single paragraph before they are allowed to open the salary schedule.
When the short form is a mistake
The common failure is loyalty to last year. The person was eligible then. This year they hold a foreign account, or they sold an employee stock option, or total income crossed the ceiling printed on the new instruction. ITR-1 will either refuse the line or, worse, omit a schedule so the line never gets asked. Refusal is the kinder result. Omission understates income.
If you are unsure, answer the utility's questions with the documents in front of you and accept its form. Then read the neighbouring guide for ITR-2 so you know which questions that form adds. Filing support is the service for a file that has already failed this checklist once.
Frequently asked questions
Is ITR-1 the same as Sahaj?
Sahaj is the name printed on ITR-1. Eligibility still depends on the instruction for the assessment year, not on the nickname.
Can a non-resident use ITR-1?
The short form is aimed at resident individuals, and many years exclude other residence categories. Read the current instruction before you select it.
I have salary and a mutual-fund sale. Can I use ITR-1?
A mutual-fund sale is usually a capital gain, which the short form does not carry. Expect ITR-2 or, if you also have a business, a business form. Confirm on the utility.
Does ITR-1 include business income if the amount is small?
Smallness is not the test. Business or professional income belongs on ITR-3 or, if a presumptive scheme applies, ITR-4. Check the utility.
Where is the income ceiling for ITR-1?
On the form instruction for the assessment year at https://www.incometax.gov.in/. The ceiling has changed. This guide does not print it.
My employer deducted tax. Is the return optional?
Tax deducted is a credit inside the return. If your facts require a return, you still file ITR-1 and you still verify it.
