What ITR-2 adds over the short form
ITR-2 exists because ITR-1 deliberately omits schedules. Capital gains, more than one house property, foreign assets and income, directorships, unlisted equity, and lottery-style winnings that the short form rejects need a form that asks for them. ITR-2 asks. It still assumes the person has no business or professional income. A freelance invoice, a shop, or a share of profit from a partnership firm is a signal to leave for .
Individuals and Hindu undivided families are the persons this form serves. A company, a limited-liability partnership, and a partnership firm use their own forms. A director files ITR-2 for personal income, including salary and gains, and the company files separately. Mixing the two PAN files is a defect, not a shortcut. Form choice in general is in .
Capital gains need their own schedule
Each sale needs the asset type, the date of acquisition, the date of transfer, the cost, and the consideration. The Act then decides whether the gain is short-term or long-term, whether indexation or a grandfathering rule applies, and whether the gain is at a special rate or in the slab. Those rules have been rewritten in recent Finance Acts. This guide does not print holding periods or rates. Read the schedule help for the assessment year on the Income Tax Department portal, and keep the broker or registrar statement underneath the line.
Mutual-fund redemptions, listed shares, debt funds, and immovable property are not one row called "investments". Classify each. Exempt gains, where a provision still exempts them, stay visible on the schedule as exempt rather than disappearing. Losses that may be carried forward must be in a return filed within the time the Act requires; a loss that never enters a valid return is a weak loss later. reminds you not to push special-rate gains through ordinary bands.
More than one house property
Each property has its own annual-value computation: rent received or receivable, municipal taxes borne by the owner, the statutory deduction from net annual value, and interest on borrowed capital to the extent the year's law allows. Self-occupied treatment is limited. The cap on interest, and how many properties may be treated as self-occupied, are Finance Act figures. Read them in the form instruction. Do not copy a cap from an older working paper.
Foreign assets are a disclosure, not only a tax line
Foreign bank accounts, financial interests, immovable property, and signing authority are disclosed even when they produced no income this year. The schedule asks for details the passport and the overseas statement can support. Omitting a dormant account because "there was no interest" is a disclosure failure. Tax on foreign income, where residence makes it taxable, is computed as well as disclosed. Keep the overseas statement and the disclosure schedule page-referenced.
Salary can still be the largest number
Most ITR-2 files still have salary. The salary schedule works as it does on the short form: employer certificate, exemptions the regime allows, and tax deducted as a credit. The reason you are on ITR-2 is the other schedule, not a different salary computation. Directors who receive sitting fees or remuneration should match the nature of the receipt to the head the certificate and the law assign, and should tick the directorship question the form asks.
Regime choice remains a two-column exercise. Capital gains taxed at a special rate often look the same under both regimes, while salary deductions do not. Compare tax on the whole return, not on the salary page alone. The filing sequence after the schedules balance is .
Checklist for an ITR-2 file
Work down the page. 1. Confirm there is no business or professional income, including partnership remuneration. 2. List every capital asset sold, with acquisition date, transfer date, cost, and consideration. 3. Count house properties and collect rent, tax, and interest papers for each. 4. List foreign assets and directorships, including nil-income accounts. 5. Read this year's gain rules and house-property caps on the portal, and cite the page in the paper. 6. Compute regime comparison on the whole return. 7. Reconcile prefill to statements. 8. Submit and verify.
Store the broker workbook and the foreign-asset list next to the acknowledgement. A later notice will ask for both. treats the gain schedule as a reconciliation, not as a single total typed from a contract note.
Edges that push the file off ITR-2
Partnership share, professional receipts, or a shop mean the "no business" assumption has failed. Speculative transactions and virtual digital assets have their own reporting; if the utility ties them to a business form this year, follow the utility. A person who only has salary plus gains stays on ITR-2.
If you opened ITR-2 out of habit and the only income is salary and interest with one house and no foreign asset, you may be making the reviewer's job heavier than requires. Heavier is legal if the utility allows it, but eligibility for the short form is worth re-checking so you do not miss a bar that actually applies the other way. The utility remains the decider.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use ITR-2 if I have a small business?
Business or professional income takes you off ITR-2, usually onto ITR-3 or ITR-4. Size is not the test. Confirm on the utility.
Do I report a foreign account with no interest?
Yes. The foreign-asset schedule is a disclosure. Report the account the form asks about, and also report interest if any was credited.
Where are capital-gains rates and holding periods?
In the assessment-year instruction on https://www.incometax.gov.in/. Recent Finance Acts changed them. This guide does not print the figures.
Does a Hindu undivided family use ITR-2?
Yes, when the family has no business or professional income and needs the wider schedules. It does not use a company form.
Can I carry forward a capital loss on ITR-2?
The form has a place for it. Carry-forward depends on filing a valid return within the time the Act states for that year. Read that condition on the portal.
Is salary computed differently on ITR-2?
The salary schedule follows the employer certificate and the regime, as on the short form. ITR-2 adds the other schedules; it does not invent a second salary method.
