Acceptance is not accuracy
The e-filing utility rejects some broken returns: a mandatory field empty, a total that does not add, a form that cannot hold a schedule you tried to skip by silence. It does not know that you sold shares. It does not know that the deduction you typed belongs only to the other regime. A green acknowledgement means the file was received and, once verified, filed. It does not mean the income is complete. Review is a reading of schedules against documents, which is the point of an before submission.
Build the review as a defect list with three columns: what the document says, what the return says, and what you changed. If you change nothing, the middle and left columns still exist, so a later notice has a trail. is the first row of that list, because every later row sits on the wrong form if that row is wrong.
Form, regime, and deduction drift
Last year's form is the most common wrong choice. A new capital gain, a foreign account, a second house, or a side invoice pushes the person off ITR-1, and sometimes off ITR-4. Filing the familiar form omits the schedule, so the gain never gets asked. The cure is the utility's eligibility questions, answered with documents, not memory.
Regime drift is the next. Deductions are typed from a list the old regime allows, while the form's regime question says new, or the reverse. The utility sometimes drops the deduction and sometimes lets a confused preparer override a line. Read the regime question and the deduction schedule as a pair. is the two-column paper that should already be in the file. If it is not, you are not ready to submit.
Credits that were typed from memory
Tax deducted is claimed from a figure the employee remembers, not from the certificate and the tax-credit statement. Two employers in one year make this worse: one certificate is missed, so salary is understated and credit is understated, and the two errors do not reliably cancel. are the documents. The statement on the portal is the matching total. Both belong in the file.
Information statements left unread
The annual information statement may show a deposit, a sale, or an interest payment you did not put on the return. Some of those lines are not taxable as the statement prints them. Silence is still a mistake. Reconcile each line to a document, add what is income, and note why a line was excluded. Processing uses those statements. Your note is what you will wish you had when a question arrives.
Verification, year, and identity
A submitted return that is not verified within the time the portal displays is an unfinished filing. People screenshot the submit button and stop. Check status the next day and finish verification by a method the portal currently lists. A method from an old circular is not a method.
Wrong assessment year, wrong PAN, and a bank account that cannot receive a refund are identity mistakes. The year determines the law. The PAN determines whose income you just declared. The pre-validated bank account determines where a refund can go. Read all three on the verification page. matters here because a credit sitting on a different PAN will never match this return.
A second job and a missed mutual-fund line
Someone files ITR-1 in June with one employer certificate. In March they had already redeemed a mutual fund, and in October they had joined a second employer whose certificate arrives late. Prefill showed neither at the moment of filing. The acknowledgement looks complete. The information statement, updated later, shows the second salary and the redemption. This is the defect pattern: filing on an incomplete document set, on a form that cannot hold a gain even after the documents arrive.
The repair, if a window is still open, is a revised return on the correct form, with both certificates and the gain schedule, verified again. Windows and the separate updated-return facility are statutory and year-specific. Read them on https://www.incometax.gov.in/ before you start a second form. If the window is shut, the file note should say so plainly rather than promising a correction you cannot file.
Checklist a reviewer can initial
Initial each line. 1. Form matches this year's utility answers. 2. Assessment year and PAN match the cover sheet. 3. Regime question matches the deduction list. 4. Every information-statement line is tied or explained. 5. Every certificate of tax deducted is in the credit schedule. 6. Special-rate income is not inside the slab base. 7. Computation sheet agrees to the paper. 8. Verification status on the portal is complete, and the acknowledgement is saved.
A line you cannot initial is a stop. Do not submit "and fix later" unless a statutory correction route is actually open and you have named it. marks a return down when the acknowledgement exists and the reconciliation does not.
How notices relate to these mistakes
An intimation from the processing centre compares your return with information it holds and with the arithmetic of the form. Many intimations are the defect list above, priced as tax or as a reduced refund. Respond from the reconciliation you already wrote, inside the time the intimation states. Do not start a fresh set of figures that match neither the return nor the documents.
Interest for late filing or short payment, where it applies, is computed under the Act at the rates in force for that year. This article does not print those rates or the dates that trigger them. The portal's computation and the official provision are the source. Your contribution is a file that makes the correct income obvious.
Frequently asked questions
If the portal accepted my return, is it correct?
Acceptance means the file passed validation and, once verified, was filed. It does not mean every income schedule is complete. Reconcile documents yourself.
I forgot to verify. What now?
Open the portal and complete a verification method it still offers, within the time it displays. Check the status after you finish.
Can I fix a wrong form later?
Only inside a revision or update window the law still allows for that assessment year. Read the condition on https://www.incometax.gov.in/ before you file a second return.
The information statement has a sale I did not make. Do I ignore it?
Do not ignore it. Document why it is wrong or not yours, and keep the statement export. Add the income if it is yours and taxable.
I claimed deductions under the new regime that the form removed. Is that a glitch?
Those deductions may belong only to the old regime. Match the regime question to the deduction list before you treat the drop as an error.
Does a GST filing replace the income-tax return?
No. They are different laws and different portals. GST turnover can help you test business receipts. It does not file your income-tax return.
