Three titles that are easy to blur
Job posts in India often ask for an “accountant / tax practitioner / consultant” as if the slash were a person. The slash hides three different days. One day closes a bank reconciliation. One day ties a GST period or an income-tax computation. One day writes a view someone else will rely on in a filing or a reply. If you are choosing a first seat, pick the day you want to be good at, then use the title that day supports.
None of the three titles, by itself, tells a client that you may sign their return or appear for them. Permission sits in the tax statutes, the GST practitioner process on the GST portal, and the professional bodies. The note is the wider map. This page is the decision between the seats. Kanoons Academy study programmes do not award the title of chartered accountant, company secretary, cost accountant, or advocate.
What an accountant is accountable for
An accountant is accountable for books that add up. That means a chart of accounts someone else can follow, bank and cash reconciled to statements, sales and purchase ledgers that match invoices, and schedules that explain debtors, creditors, and stock. The output is a trial balance and a set of workings an auditor or a tax colleague can start from. The output is not, by itself, a tax opinion.
is the free study programme for that base: the statements that GST and income-tax work sit on. Use it if your gap is debits, credits, and a clean ledger. Completing it shows study. It does not make you a CA. ICAI grants that qualification. In a week on this seat you might spend Monday on bank feeds, Tuesday on sales invoices, Wednesday on vendor bills, Thursday on a review of exception accounts, and Friday on a pack for the tax colleague. The tax filing is the next seat, not an extra button on the same screen.
What people mean by tax practitioner
In hiring, “tax practitioner” usually means the person who turns books into a return and keeps the portal file. On a GST desk that is the outward return, the credit reconciliation, and the summary return. On an income-tax desk that is the computation, the 26AS tie-out, and the upload. The and the describe those weeks. A practitioner who cannot show the working paper is only a data-entry operator with a louder title.
Use the title carefully in front of clients. Preparing a draft under supervision is one activity. Holding out that you represent the taxpayer is another. Read the current eligibility for GST practitioners on the GST portal, and read the authorised-representative rules in the and the Act, before you print the words on a letterhead. A course, including Accounting Fundamentals or a tax elective, does not complete that reading for you.
Enrolment and representation are statutory
GST practitioner enrolment is a portal process with eligibility conditions in the law and rules. Income-tax representation is limited to categories the Act allows. Company-law appearances and certifications follow their own provisions and, where relevant, ICSI membership. Check the official text for the capacity you want. Do not treat a job title, a visiting card, or a study-programme certificate as enrolment. If you are unsure which capacity a task needs, ask before you file or before you sign a reply.
Overlap inside a small firm
A three-person office will ask one hire to reconcile the bank in the morning and draft GSTR-1 in the afternoon. The overlap is real. The folders should still show which hat you wore. Mark the bookkeeping pack and the tax working as separate documents, with separate review. When something goes wrong, “I did the accounts and the return” is not a trail. “Here is the trial balance Priya reviewed, and here is the return working Amit signed” is a trail.
What a tax consultant is asked to deliver
A consultant is asked for a view: is this supply mixed, does this receipt sit under this head, how should this notice be answered given the year already filed. The deliverable is a note that states the facts you were given, the provision you read, the conclusion, and what would change the conclusion. It is not a dump of sections with the client’s name pasted at the top.
That work belongs with someone who is allowed to advise on those facts and who has read the text, not a summary. A junior can assemble the facts, the invoices, and a first list of provisions to check. The junior should not send the note to the client. If you want this seat eventually, start by learning to read a statute and by mastering one lane’s file so your facts are reliable. The is a different consulting neighbourhood, closer to the board and the MCA portal than to a tax head.
How to choose a starting seat
Start in accounting if the books you see are messy and you cannot yet explain a trial balance. You will be a better tax colleague later, and Accounting Fundamentals is the study path for that gap. Start in GST or income tax if the books already exist and you want the portal file. Read those two career notes and pick one period to practise end to end. Start toward consulting only after you can assemble facts without dropping a year or a GSTIN.
Ask each employer three questions. Who reviews the work before it leaves the office? Which portals will I use in the first month? What am I not allowed to sign? The third answer matters more than the title on the offer letter. Decline a title you cannot explain to a client in one honest sentence.
Titles you can use, and titles the law reserves
You can describe study truthfully: “I completed a study programme in accounting fundamentals” or “I practised a GST period file.” You can describe employment truthfully: “I prepared purchase reconciliations for reviewer sign-off.” You cannot award yourself CA, CS, or CMA. Those are granted by ICAI, ICSI, and the Institute of Cost Accountants of India. You cannot call yourself an advocate because you read a course. Enrolment is a Bar Council matter after a law degree.
You also should not promise outcomes you do not control: a refund amount, a notice that will “go away,” or a job the Academy never offered. In the decision between these three seats, choose the work you can show. Bring the redacted working paper that matches the title you want. Leave the other two titles off the page until the work is real.
Frequently asked questions
Is a tax practitioner the same as a CA?
No. CA is a qualification ICAI grants. “Tax practitioner” is used loosely for people who prepare tax files, and in GST it can also mean a specific enrolment. Check which meaning the speaker intends.
Can an accountant file GST returns?
An accountant often prepares the books that feed the return. Who may file, sign, or represent depends on the portal authorisation and the law. Preparing a draft and submitting it in someone else’s name without authority are different acts.
Which course matches this comparison?
If you are choosing a first seat and the gap is the books, start with Accounting Fundamentals. GST and income-tax study programmes come after you know which return file you are trying to learn.
What should I say if I have done all three in a small office?
Say what you did on each file and who reviewed it. “I reconciled the bank, drafted the outward supplies for review, and never sent a tax opinion” is a clear account.
Do consultants earn more?
This catalogue does not publish salary comparisons. The consultant seat requires a view someone will rely on, which brings responsibility. Choose it for the work, not for a figure you saw online.
Does Kanoons Academy confer any of these titles?
No. Academy courses are study programmes. They are not a substitute for CA, CS, CMA, or a law degree, and they are not enrolment as a GST practitioner or as an advocate.
